For many tasks, Sentry-go provides a direct way of monitoring a particular area of your server or software environment. However, there may also be times when you have a more unique monitoring requirement, something more specific that you wish to verify, or you're simply looking to upsize your exsiting monitoring scripts to a more extensive & manageable framework.

Sentry-go allows you to perform your own custom monitoring by plugging scripts or other external commands. Here we're calling a batch file that in turn will verify a SQL Server database.

Defining a scripted monitoring task

You also define how the monitor will interpret the results. In this case, we have command-line output (from DBCC) and so we check that for errors. If it indicates '0 allocation errors' and '0 consistency errors', then no error was found.

Determing the script's result

When run, alerts will be triggered as defined in the event the script fails, or the result indicates an error. You can also inspect the job for more details (details of the call, result codes & output) through your web browser, as shown here.
