Monitoring Services |
|
|
|
|
Monitoring Windows services & the status of those services is often the first
step to ensuring systems & software functions are working. If any of these fail,
or are stopped inadvertently, critical systems such as databases, e-mail or even
Windows itself can be affected.
|
|
|
 |
When Windows NT was first introduced, so was the concept, in Windows anyway, of
the service. Services are background tasks that run even when no logged on user
is present.
|
|
|
Windows itself, as well as many other applications are implemented, in part or
fully, as Windows services, with some being started automatically when the
system boots up.
Without them, functions such as printing, logging on, databases, e-mail, web
sites etc. won't function, or some of their functionality will be lost
The monitoring of Windows Services would ordinarily be based on ...
- Checking they're status manually within Windows
- Waiting for someone who, or another system which relies on it to report the
failure.
With Sentry-go, monitoring the status of Windows Services is quick, simple and can be
done throughout the day without the need for manual intervention. The monitor
can also restart these services automatically if required, providing faster
resolution & allowing you time to investigate further & resolve any underlying
fault.
You can,
for example ...
- Automatically monitor services configured to "auto-start"
- Monitor the status of custom services & notify if stopped or paused
- Optionally restart services if stopped
- Notify System Administrator(s) of errors or failures
Examples where Windows Service monitoring would be of benefit include ... |
|
|
- Any Windows server - e.g. Active Directory, domain, application, file, print,
database, web, e-mail servers etc.
- Critical Windows PCs
