Scripted Monitoring |

For many tasks, Sentry-go provides a direct way of monitoring a particular area
of your server or software environment. However, there may also be times when
you have a more unique monitoring requirement, something more specific that you
wish to verify, or you're simply looking to upsize your exsiting monitoring
scripts to a more extensive & manageable framework.

There are many different software environments & systems around today, all doing
specific jobs and many extremely important to the day to day running of a
business or institution. A lot of the time, these can be monitored & verified
using a standard set of tasks, like the ones found "out of the box" in
Sentry-go. |

However, we recognise that even these may, at times not go far enough. Maybe for
your environment they need to be tweaked. Or maybe you have in-house or custom
systems that are checked in a different way - e.g. through a command-line tool
or interface.
Traditionally, checks such as these are performed using custom routines, running
command-line tools or from scripts. These are often run manually and their
results analysed, again by someone checking them once complete.
With Sentry-go, performing this type of monitoring is easy and
above all, automatic. By plugging jobs or scripts into the Sentry-go framework, your own custom logic (command-line
tools, VBScripts etc.) can be managed & run automatically by the monitor.
What's more, once the task has finished, Sentry-go's built-in features can verify
the results - again automatically & action can then be taken or
Administrators notified if problems are detected. You can,
for example ...
- Run command-line tools, batch files, or scripts such as VBScripts
- Schedule jobs to be run regularly, hourly or on specific days etc.
- Perform whatever custom logic you need within the scripts
- Automatically analyse results based on either return code, output on each
line, or total output from the
job or script
- Take action based on the success or failure of the script
- Notify System Administrator(s), operations etc. if errors are detected
Upsizing
If you already have monitoring scripts, then Sentry-go allows you to upsize and
take advantage of the response, alerting, reporting & management framework,
whilst providing you with the flexibility of total custom monitoring.
