Monitoring FTP |
Monitoring FTP access & availability and ensuring your FTP server is working
efficiently can be extremely important, especially if you rely on it for file transfers, uploads or downloads or
run web sites that do.
FTP is used extensively for the transfer of files from one machine to another.
You may use it to provide downloads from your site, or to transfer files
internally or externally to another system.
Typically, FTP sessions are run
either automatically in the background or sometimes from dedicated FTP clients.
Where background automation is used, or you have no control over the client
(e.g. if one of your customers is running it), it is often very difficult to detect faults.
In the case of an external customer, he or she will probably not report it, instead
choosing to go elsewhere on the
internet.
With Sentry-go, monitoring FTP servers & it's ability to perform FTP
operations is easy. With it, you can automate checks that effectively emulate
user actions, interacting with the server just like a client would and analysing the
results automatically. You can,
for example ...
- Monitor FTP server availability
- Check the ability to access a remote file via FTP
- Verify you can GET (retrieve) a file from the FTP server
- Verify you can PUT (transfer) a file to the FTP server
- Run direct FTP commands and check the reply
- Notify System Administrator(s) of errors or failures
Examples where FTP monitoring would be of benefit include ...
- FTP servers & sites
- Web sites that utilies FTP
- Overnight, batch or business to business processes that utilise FTP
