Question:
What steps should be performed when installing Sentry-go
Plus! to a grouyp of servers ?
Answer:
Sentry-go is made up of a core number of components,
each with a specific job to perform. There are a number of ways of installing
the product, depending on your ultimate requirements and the target
environment/site, but here are some recommendations ...
- Install the Sentry-go Monitor Service on each
server.
This service is the component that performs the actual monitoring. To
ensure network overheads are kept a minimum, the service must be installed on
each server that is to be monitored.
How you do this will depend on your environment and software deployment
strategy. For a small number of machines, simply run the Setup Wizard on each
server. From v2.0, the Wizard allows for more automated installations which
require the minimum amount of input. However, where more mass-deployment is required, we recommend using a software
deployment mechanism to record & automate the installation.
When installing monitors on multiple machines, it is strongly recommended that
the web server's listen port is set to the same value on ALL servers. To avoid
potential conflicts with web servers, we recommend setting this to a high value
thats unlikely to be used by other software - e.g. port 1000.
It is recommended that security (passwords) be applied for Configuration updates
and potentially web reports. This is particularly important if the Client
Console is to be installed on many desktops, yet you only want limited access to
make Configuration changes etc.
- Install the Sentry-go Client Tools
By default, installing the monitor will also install the Client Console,
allowing lcoal configuration changes to be made if network connectivity fails.
However, most likely you will want to access & monitor alerts, as well as
perform configuration updates etc. from your desktop (or access the information
from many desktops - such as an Operations or Administration department,
Helpdesk or Support team.
Once again, exactly how you do this will depend on your
environment and software deployment strategy. You can either run the Setup
Wizard on each desktop (and choose to install client tools only) or use a
software deployment mechanism to record & automate the installation.

Registering Sentry-go Monitors with the Console
The final task is to link the two together. You do this by registering (adding)
each monitor to each Console. You only newed do this once as the Console will
save details locally so that they will appear automatically the next time it is
started.
If you wish to register a single server ...
- Start the Console on the target desktop
- Click the "Add" button from the button bar
- Enter the name or IP address of the server in the first field or select
"..." to choose it from a list of servers.
- Enter the port number on which the server listens for requests (e.g. 1000 as
mentioned above).
- It is recommended that the check box "Start the monitor (if req'd) & verify
the TCP/IP
port when registering" is selected.
- If checked, the Console will verify & optionally attempt to start the monitor if it is
not running,
prior to registration.
- If not checked, the server will be added regardless of whether the monitor is actually
installed. No validation will be performed in this case.
- Click OK
- The results of the registration process will be shown in the results window.
If you wish to register a group of servers, all using the same
listen port ...
- Start the Console on the target desktop
- Click the "Add" button from the button bar
- Select the second "register the monitors on the following servers" checkbox.
- A list of servers which have the Sentry-go monitoring service installed
will be displayed.
- Select each server you wish to add from the list.
- Enter the port number on which the selected servers listen for requests
(e.g. 1000 as mentioned above). All the servers must listen on the same port.
- Click OK
- The results of each registration will be shown in the results window.
- Adding many servers may take a few minutes to complete, especially if the
network speed is slow.
