Q. How do you configure Sentry-go ?
You can configure a monitor locally or remotely using the Client Console or the
Easy Access Utility where appropriate..
The Setup Wizard will, where possible pre-configure the monitor when it is
installed. To view, edit or add additional monitored resources, simply run the
appropriate client tool, select the monitor and click "Configure".
Q. Can I configure the monitor remotely - e.g. from my desktop ?
Yes, you can configure the monitor remotely from any Quick Monitor
Easy Access Utility or Client Console, as long as
it is registered with the Client.
Q. Can I verify my configured check will work ?
In many cases, you can click the "Test" button provided to verify all or part of
a configuration. This will access the target monitor in order to verify the settings.
Q. What happens if the check isn't configured correctly ?
If a check cannot be performed - for example, if an incorrect
check was copied from another monitor, an alert will be sent indicating that a
configuration error occurred as well as appear on connected Client Consoles. The Current Status web report will also highlight the check(s) that
are in error.
If you have the Enterprise Option, details of any configuration errors are
logged & shown centrally from all monitors on the Configuration Errors report.
Q. When do new settings take effect ?
Settings are automatically configured by the monitor. Typically this will take up to 30
seconds to register & apply changes. Alternatively you can stop/start the
underlying monitoring service to pick up the changes immediately.
Q. Can I configure checks to be run at specific times ?
Yes, depending on the check type, you can often choose to monitor at regular
intervals, hourly, daily or at a given time on specific days only.
Q. Can I copy the configuration from one server to another ?
Yes ...
- From the Easy Access Utility installed, you can export
some or all monitoring and/or alerting settings from a monitor and import them
into other Quick Monitors.
- Fom the Client Console, you can or synchronize one or more monitoring component or alerting settings from
one monitor to other selected (or all) defined monitors.
Q. I have the same checks & alerts to configure on multiple servers. Is there
a quick way of doing this ?
Yes. Simply configure one server with the appropriate settings. Then using the
Client Console, synchronize the appropriate configuration settings and/or alerts
from this server to one, some, or all of your other servers.
You can also use the Easy Access Utility to export settings to a
file which can then be imported into other Quick Monitors.
Q. Can I change the formatting of dates ?
Yes, you can choose to use either UK (dd/mm/yyyy) or US (mm/dd/yyyy) formats.
Q. Does the user running Senty-go need any special permissions to run ?
By default, the Sentry-go monitoring service runs as the "Local System" user.
This user has ful access to the local server and will normally be fine. However, in some cases - for example, if the
monitor requires access to network resources on another machine, you may need to run it from a domain account.
In addition, some checks require a specific logon which is configured as part of
the check. For example ...
- In order for SQL Server block monitoring to operate, it must be configured
with a SQL
User ID that has access to the MASTER database and has SysAdmin privileges .
- To monitor e-mail send/receive, the user entered must have access to the
mailbox.
Responses & alerts that call an external file, script or batch file to run can
be configured to run thoses tasks from a named user. This user is configured
with the response or alert itself.
Q. How long can Sentry-go run for without needing to be restarted ?
The Sentry-go monitoring service is designed to operate 24 hours a day, for the
same amount of time Windows itself is running.
However, as many checks make use of external software, such as performance
counters, printer drivers etc., one some occasions, higher memory usage can
occur over time. This is dependent on a number of factors including the version
of Windows being run and the urrentl service pack level, the software being
installed, the monitoring checks being performed and the frequency of those
checks.
As these conditions are often caused by technical issues with external software,
we usually can't directly control or prevent these from occuring. In cases where
this behaviour is observed, we recommend scheduling the stopping & restarting
the Sentry-go moinitoring service periodically, such as fortnightly or monthly.
This in turn releases any memory associated with the service, including any used
by 3rd party routines or drivers.
If you have any specific questions or issues regarding this, please contact our
support team, Support@Sentry-go.com.
